{"id":127,"date":"2010-09-21T05:59:00","date_gmt":"2010-09-21T09:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/batchat.net\/?p=127"},"modified":"2010-09-21T05:59:00","modified_gmt":"2010-09-21T09:59:00","slug":"are-we-engaged-yet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bevologyinc.com\/blog\/2010\/09\/21\/are-we-engaged-yet\/","title":{"rendered":"Are We Engaged Yet?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"MsoNormal\">I had just finished writing my presentation for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usdrinksconference.com\/\">U.S. Drinks Conference<\/a> and was reflecting on a few recent conversations I had on social media marketing and it dawned on me that we\u2019ve turned a corner.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear:both;text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/dev.bevologyinc.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/aa7fe-headinsand.jpg\" style=\"clear:left;float:left;margin-bottom:1em;margin-right:1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"124\" src=\"http:\/\/dev.bevologyinc.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/aa7fe-headinsand.jpg?w=300\" width=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Within the past two days I\u2019ve spoken to self-described Luddites or representatives thereof (guy has his secretary print out emails for him), expert practitioners of the craft, and a bunch of folks somewhere in the middle.<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">That whole spectrum will always be there, but what I realized is that I\u2019m no longer an evangelist having to explain the new thing.&nbsp; We\u2019ve finally reached a point where at least everyone\u2019s heard of social media. And while they might be a bit hazy on the definition and terminology (social media, social networks, word of mouth, viral marketing etc.) there\u2019s pretty much universal recognition of its existence and importance.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">That\u2019s progress.&nbsp; In spite of the few comments you still hear that \u201cthis Internet thing is gonna blow over\u201d I think most people in the marketing business recognize that there\u2019s been a sea change in the way we need to communicate with our customers, prospects and suspects.&nbsp; <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">Simply stated, it\u2019s no longer a situation where marketers are shouting at the multitudes and hoping someone hears and maybe even pays attention, but rather a conversation among and between people whose actions indicate they share an interest in a subject.&nbsp; Whether they\u2019ve become a Fan of a Facebook page, bookmark a forum or newsgroup, read or get an RSS feed from a blog, they\u2026WE\u2026 all have one thing in common\u2026we\u2019re ENGAGED.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">Engagement, however, is a two way street and has an implicit agreement that the commitment is mutual.&nbsp; So it\u2019s incumbent on marketers to recognize that at its very core, social media is personal.&nbsp; Even a brand with a quarter million Facebook fans has to make each one of them feel an individual connection.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">Coming back to my intro thought here, we have turned a corner, but we still have a long road in front of us.&nbsp; The challenge now is how to scale personal communications within larger communities.&nbsp; <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">That\u2019s one of the subjects we\u2019ll be hearing a lot about at the USDC\u2026I\u2019m psyched to hear what <a href=\"http:\/\/tv.winelibrary.com\/\">Gary Vaynerchuk<\/a> has to say, as well as the folks on the panel I\u2019m moderating on social media.&nbsp; So <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drvino.com\/\">Tyler Colman<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/cocktails.about.com\/\">Colleen Graham<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qwwineexperts.com\/\">Nora Favelukes<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.veevlife.com\/main.php\">Carter Reum<\/a>\u2026.what do you think?<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had just finished writing my presentation for the U.S. Drinks Conference and was reflecting on a few recent conversations I had on social media marketing and it dawned on me that we\u2019ve turned a corner.
